Why Should Students Be Encouraged for Mathematics Olympiads?

Mathematics can be simply termed as the study of numbers, shapes and patterns. It is one of the most important subject in every student’s study life. It has a huge scope in every field of our life, such as medicine, engineering, finance, natural science, economics. We are all surrounded by a mathematical world.

Mathematics is simply all the things you think it is. Everyone uses mathematics in their day to day lives, and most of the time, they do not even realize it. Without math, our world would be missing a key component in its makeup. Regardless of one’s chosen path, you can't get rid of mathematics. Creating spending budgets, paying for groceries, buying things on sale, and cooking meals all have to deal with math in some way or another. One has to be able to measure out ingredients, count money, and determine limits when it comes to certain tasks like the examples above. People never realize how much math is around them until they take a step back and look.

Mathematics also provides us with the golden ratio formula, which allows us to derive the beauty of anything. Every part of nature is based on mathematics. You can also do math calculations to understand the creations of nature. Bees, well versed in geometry, use hexagons to make honeycombs. Since we know our important math can be in our everyday life, why not encourage our children to take up exams like Mathematics Olympiads at a young age? Indian Talent Olympiad has been conducting International Mathematics Olympiad (IMO) every year for students from class 1 to class 10 with an aim to help students get better with numbers at a young age.

Taking up exams like Olympiads gives budding and bright students with exposure at national and international level. ITO provides them with the platform to show the world of the talent they have. These exams not only develop analytical thinking and logical reasoning skills among students, they also help them with their academics. Questions asked in these exams are usually the applications of the concepts that are taught at school.

When students inculcate a healthy sense of competition, it boasts their morale. It motivates them to work harder than the competition around them. It makes them focus on improvement, wanting to be perfect at what they do. With frequent practice and revision, it only helps sharpen their skills.

As parents, it becomes our responsibility to encourage our children to take up these exams to make sure, every child with talent is nurtured from a young age.
